Once tagged by this entry, the assignment is to write a journal entry with six random facts about yourself. Then, pick six of your friends and tag them; no tag backs. This explanation should be included.

1. I use a secret nickname for myself when I've been bad.

2. My lumberjack-like appearance is due to a fetish.

3. My penis is getting smaller every day.

Just kidding!
  1. I like not liking lj memes. (and I think it's totally ok that the word meme has been co-opted by lj & kin. The tubes find their own use for things.)
  2. I like salty drinks.
  3. I prefer slip-on shoes.
  4. Among people casual acquaintances and coworkers, I am almost always considered either extremely strange or extremely boring. Obviously I'm both. There seems to be a similar dichotomy in people's perception of whether I'm outgoing or quiet.
  5. I often wash my hands before peeing rather than after. I know where it's been and I washed it when I put it there.
  6. I swab with alcohol rather than use deodorant because I'm allergic to all the deodorant that works for me.

Vera Sans looks like ass. [Mon, Apr. 3rd - 3pm]
[Tags|, ]

A few years ago everyone was all upset about the lack of pretty fonts available to free operating systems. Bitstream released "vera sans" under a liberal license & there was much rejoicing.

Why?

Sample is from here, but it will only look ugly if you have this god-awful font installed.

It's anti-aliased all the time, which is fine. I don't know the first thing about computer fonts, but aren't designers supposed to do "hinting" so that the uprights line up with pixel columns? Looking at it makes me think my eyeglasses are covered in vaseline. And I don't wear eyeglasses.

I know that example is with ClearType, but ClearType isn't magical, is it? Isn't this objectively easier to read and look at? Or am I nuts?

PS Thanks, gwen, for your tutorial on CSS borders. Instead I will just copypaste your code thankyou.

The funniest thing on LiveJournal ever. [Thu, Nov. 6th - 10am]
[Tags|, , , ]

So, I was bored the other day. I browsed [info]p0llux's friends list. I saw a post from [info]saratobias about running out of Adderol. I responded. Check the two comments I received.

Please don't respond to those folks' comments.

Jesus, God almighty. My post was patronizing and worthless and probably didn't contribute anything to [info]saratobias' situation. However. That second response has made me think just a little bit less of humanity in general. I can't really tell if the dude is joking or not.

What drives men to that kind of rage? Is it the same thing that drives men to be patronizing and worthless (like I was in my comment)? Women have rage, can be patronizing and worthless, but they don't do it like [info]fear and I.

I think it's the same impulse that leads people to obsess about Ayn Rand, or become fascists, or stock up on guns. Or get facial tattoos. It's what lead Burroughs to write about control addicts and his weird brand of homosexuality.

I've got like ten different ways I'd like to respond to this asshole, but... I hope I'll refrain. [info]fear and loathing. Dangerous vibrations.

Edit: Hehehe. I just found out that [info]nakedmen is [info]saratobias' brother. Those Pandrax folks are so self indulgent. Jesus.

Danger, Party People! Danger! [Tue, Oct. 14th - 5pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

I'm not feeling a party.

I'm not feeling a party at all.

Unless something magical happens, I don't think I'm going to do a 60+ person NYE bash again.

It's not about the money, it's about arranging a venue. I don't even want to throw another party at my mom's house (too far from home for me), so I'm not going to do a very good job at convincing her to let me.

And I also don't want to think about finding someplace to rent, or protecting someone else's parent's shit from damage. I'd do my place in the Mission, but it'd be too small.

Any brilliant ideas out there?

Temperature ranges are higher on weekdays than on weekends. The workweek influences climate.

This effect is strongest in the US, but also occurs in China and Japan.

Irreversible [Thu, Sep. 11th - 9am]
[Tags|, , ]

I wish I hadn't watched it.

Gaspar Noe's Irreversible. The IMDB description is worthless. Read the Salon review first. It contains spoilers, but I definitely wish the movie hadn't been quite such a surprise to me. Well, I wish I'd been warned if I had to watch it, but given the power to erase the past (like Noe), I'd have unwatched it.

It's completely horrifying, and fantastically well made. The scenes are shown in reverse order, like Memento, but the goal here is much less plot oriented. The acting is fantastic. The navel-gazing bullshit camera work starts off annoying, but winds up very successful.

Anyway. I really feel like I'm suffering from mild post-traumatic stress due to watching that movie. Don't watch it. If you do watch it, and the first (grotesque, explicit) murder scene makes you nervous (it didn't bother me), then stop watching immediately, because the movie is about to get much, much, much harder to watch. If you make it through the second painful scene, then keep watching. The director does his damnedest to make it worth it.

I feel dirty. Eeeugh.

Retarded Cowboy [Thu, Jul. 24th - 10am]
[Tags|, , , , ]

There's a retarded cowboy on the bus across the aisle from me. He's like Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade, just with no endearing qualities. Every time anything happens on the bus, he starts cursing. When we stop and pick people up, it's "Aw, Jesus Christ!" He'll repeat until we pull away. "Jesus! Jesus Christ!"

He also cursed out the window when he bumped his head on it. "God DAMN it." He's absolutely tone deaf, which I know because he's singing along to his walkman. His cigarette scarred vocal chords are working, but his mouth isn't exactly, so he mostly just pronounces the vowels: "Way oooh ray uh ray shooow. Aaahn yoooo shih, saaaay fruh uh seeeee." Then, he just moans for a while. Somehow, his idiotic grunting... got stuck in my head.

I want him to suffer before he dies.

Ok, I've had dumber ideas than a daruma doll icon tattoo. Not many. I'm definitely taking suggestions, though.

The party. It is definitely now a wedding reception. There will be cake, and everything. R is getting married tomorrow in Reno.

Please everybody come. If enough people express interest, we can arrange for a priest to be on hand to marry anyone that wants to. Recent trends certainly indicate that someone I know will decide to get married between now and next Saturday.

Regarding cock. [Fri, Apr. 25th - 10am]

They don't want me listening to my iPod at work. It apparently doesn't fit the company image for me to be bop bop bopping in my chair.

I swear, listening to music is one of the few things that can distract me from slashdot and ars and get me to really focus on work.

They better hire me, or this is an annoying fucking move.

Edit (1/16/2004):
Yeah, they hired me. No, I still can't listen to my iPod at work. And yes, I still read slashdot and ars too much. And LJ.

fear and loathing [Thu, Feb. 13th - 10am]

[Current Mood |twisted]

Smaller, more usable nuclear weapons.

Multiple drug resistant staph infections in certain limited communities of gay men.

Multiple drug resistant TB.

Computer security is a problem that is, by definition, NP-hard. See the halting problem. See the myriad spyware packages on most home PCs. I am no longer confident of my privacy, and spyware proves that we're all a target.

Stopping a smallpox breakout might be very difficult. Causing a smallpox breakout might be comparatively easy. Something makes me think that no one would do it, were GW not the president. The essence of GW is hate. Not that he's necessarily full of hate, it's just something that he revolves around/is based upon. I wish I knew how to put it.

Data, please. If you give me raw data, I will be *more* interested in your product. Try using sony-ericsson's website to choose a cell phone. They don't want to tell you the actual features of their cell phones. They only want to tell you about how many ring tones you can get, and they don't want to tell you about cell phones that aren't marketted in your area. This is a minor example. Try getting information about your internet access service quality. It is *this* kind of dishonesty that will destroy our economy, let alone corporate malfeasance.

Some marketting companies employ shills to hang out in nightclubs, act interested in members of the opposite sex, and casually promote their product. Their product might be a movie, another club, a personal electronic device. This is essentially different than hiring cute girls to hand out flyers. As if meeting strangers wasn't confusing enough already.

Paranoia, fear and loathing. Dangerous vibrations. I crave control over my surroundings more desperately than ever before in my life. Perhaps just better understanding. Something feels terribly wrong.

[editor's note: This post is dumb as crap. I'll leave it up for posterity.]

I wish libertarians weren't so dumb.

If they weren't so dumb, I'd be one. Sure, some of them are smart. Some of my best friends are libertarians (hehe).

But so many of them seem to miss the point, and go on and on about corporatism and the virtue of American business. If they just spent all their time talking about how authoritarian the US has become, they might win some converts. If they went after corporate welfare *first*, and social welfare *second*, then maybe they wouldn't seem like heartless bastards.

Even better, if they made more noise about limited, targetted social programs that could replace social welfare, maybe they wouldn't have to *be* such heartless bastards.

Anyway. Between the CSEA, the CTEA, the DMCA, and fucked up patent law, authoritarian government is squashing the American technology industry. Things that can and should be cheap, easy, and decentralized, are going to be expensive, hard, and controlled by a few large corporations. This is an old story, of course, but it's happening as we speak.

Of course, the problem isn't libertarians. The problem is how apathetic most of us are about our freedoms. So everything's going to have to get a lot worse before people start to care again. Maybe we'll start with the CSEA.

I've got a marble stuck under my skin.

No, really. It's right next to my adam's apple. On the left side. It's kindof like the BB that's under Ben Stiller's skin on his knuckle in The Royal Tenenbaums. Except this is bigger. And it's on my neck. And this isn't a movie.
